There is a crisis of listening in the world. A lot of people want to talk, but very few want to listen, and people are really suffering from this lack of empathy. Empathy is important for any listener. It’s almost impossible to develop sensitivity and respect for another person’s vulnerability without knowing what it’s like to be vulnerable yourself. Whether someone is confessing a misdeed, proposing an idea, revealing anxiety, sharing a dream, or recalling a significant event, know that that person is giving a piece of him or herself. And you need to handle it with care; otherwise, the person will start to edit future conversations with you, knowing they can’t be real with you.
