  • The Daily Prompt – No. 346

    What’s the longest trip you’ve ever taken?

    This is an unconventional answer, but it was a trip to my cousins’ place for the summer. When my sister and I were younger, our parents separated. We would spend the weeks during the school year with our dad, while we usually spent the weekends, holidays, and summers with our mom.

    But, one summer was different. My sister and I stayed at our cousins’ place in Rockland County for what seemed like the entire summer. (It was only six weeks, but felt so long to the younger me.) It was such a cool experience. We were in a different part of the state, hanging with our extended family, playing and having a good time. The daily routine consisted of waking up, watching MTV and BET, and playing PlayStation. It was a very simple time.

    What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

    This is an interesting prompt. As I think, my parents didn’t keep many traditions. Unfortunately, they separated when I was six. It’s kind of hard to do that while being a part of two distinct households. However, the main traditions that I kept is being a person of faith and being committed to serving in the church.

    Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?

    We don’t necessarily cook a special dish. However, we go out to eat and have dinner with each other. These dinners have become a family tradition. I wish that I had been able appreciate them earlier in life.

  • The Daily Prompt – No. 41

    Describe a positive thing a family member has done for you.

    Back when I was in college I started doing working for the university catering company as a part time gig. A couple of buddies and I got put on by one of our mutual friends. The hours were sometimes wacky and the perks were nice (e.g., free food, wine).

    However I needed to get a tuxedo to work the main events and I didn’t have the money to get one. Enter my aunt. She loaned me the money to buy a tux and it helped me a lot. I could work the gigs. I paid her back with my first paycheck that I got.

    There are other instances of family helping me out but this was the first one that came to mind.
