  • The Daily Prompt – No. 317

Which languages do you speak and how did that impact your life?

I write and speak English but I have an affinity for learning other languages. I realized this when I took Latin for the first time high school. Learning other languages helped me see the nuances and relationships between the different elements of the English language.

English can be imprecise at times. However, you can express yourself clearly if you are open to becoming a wordsmith.

Also, I’m taking several Duolingo courses excluding chess. Ive been doing Spanish and Russian for a while. (About 10 or so years ago I actually finished the Spanish course and became disinterested in Duolingo for several years.) Recently, I started the Chinese course.

As an aside, I’ve become impressed with the quality of product that Duolingo has produced over the past few years, including chess. It has replaced my old chess trainer app (that I paid for).

Languages are the currency of expression. Thankfully it has helped me to become more clear in my thinking. And as much I tend to bottle things in it helps to have some sort of precision of thought.

What is a word you feel that too many people use?

The n-word. I think it’s a low-word class word that’s been used by one group of people to gatekeep and exercise a form of authority over another group.

.It’s vulgar enough that no one should really say it. We would be better off as humans if we were to disregard it and put it in the dustbin of history.

  • Questions of Fluency

Here’s an interesting blog post from the DuoLingo team on how long it takes to be fluent in another language.

  • DuoLingo – February achiever

Normally I would save this Twitter but in my goal to post content daily, I figured that this was the best forum for it.

    Cheers.
